ABSTRACT

This study examined the effects of a picture book based backward chaining intervention on story recall in a young child with developmental delays. A multiple-probe design across behaviors was used with three stories as target behaviors. During intervention, the researcher read each story and asked six recall questions in reverse order beginning with the final event. Results showed low and stable baseline performance followed by clear improvements after the intervention. Mean performance increased from 2.4-16.7% during baseline to 56.3-64.6% during intervention and remained high during maintenance (83.3-100%). Effect size indices supported the effectiveness of the procedure.
